Thank you all for your comments! It's encouraging to see that others want something different than the thankless, consumer culture that is around us.

I agree and we don't even have to go as far as another country. There are many places in the US where people live like 3rd world countries. I wish everyone would make more of an effort to help the people in their own backyard.

I totally agree with your message today. After my first husband was killed in an auto accident all I wanted to do was buy "stuff". I was trying to get rid of the emptiness by spending. I wasted so much money and I so regret it. I learned my lesson the hard way. It doesn't happen very often but when I start wanting more I say a prayer that I will be content with what I have been BLESSED with.

Thanks for the reminder Laryssa. One of the reasons why I scan my Southern Living Magazine and then look around my home and say, "You might not be right out of a magazine, but you are my HOME and I am thankful." Thank God for resources to make our homes and lives cozy and beautiful and then the self-discipline to truly enjoy it and not constantly be searching for more. I'm also reminded when I look around our home of how many of the things I treasure here were given to me - from God I received my precious husband and the very gift of eternal life. From mom, family and friends I can start naming the curtains, a blanket, a picture frame, a beautiful piece of artwork... LOL Yes, great gain is truly found in contentment. Love you.
