Nester has written the greatest step-by-step tassel ebook that I have ever seen.  I bought and downloaded it yesterday.  It’s full of wonderful photos and charming instructions.

Fall Inspiration Party at Southern Hospitality!

Fall-color

Rhoda at Southern Hospitality is hosting a Fall Inspiration Party!  Here in Tennessee, fall is just starting to touch the leaves with color and the breezes are beginning to cool.  Thank God for an end to the humidity!

I thought I’d share my mantel decorations for fall…

IMG_5622

The mantle clock belongs to my Grandmother, who is living with us and the waterfall painting is an oil that I painted a few years ago.  Being an artist, I’m so critical of my own work, but I’m actually very happy with how this painting turned out!

This wreath is proof you don’t have to start from scratch to make a pretty arrangement.  I just added what I had to a store bought wreath.

IMG_5624

In this aged copper urn, I made an arrangement of dark tan dahlias, red mum like flowers, dried hydrangea blossoms and pheasant feathers.  I have always admired these pheasant feathers, so I’m so glad to finally have some!

Tip:  To get tall pheasant feathers without breaking the budget; get small feathers and use floral tape to add them to floral stems.  (Or just go with what you have and tape them to sticks or old silk flower stems!)

One of my favorite ways to celebrate to start of fall is to simmer cloves, cinnamon and orange slices in water on the stove.  In just a few minutes the whole house smells so cozy!

What do you add to your home to make it feel like fall?

Works For Me Wednesday: Romantic Strawberries

strawberry-closeup

Here is a quick and easy way to take strawberries from regular to romantic!

Wash and dry the strawberries. For the fan shape you’ll want to leave the cap (the green leaves) on, for the heart shape you’ll need to take the cap off.

fan-cut-strawberry

To make the fan all you do is make thin cuts from the bottom of the berry to the top, but don’t go all the way through the cap.

strawberry-fan-garnishGently fan out the slices and you have a beautiful garnish.

strawberry-heart

Here’s how you make the strawberry hearts: Take a clean berry and remove the cap by cutting a v shape on the narrow side of the berry.side-view-strawberry-heart

Slice the narrow side top to bottom and you’ll  have strawberry hearts!

These fancy strawberries are fun to give to your kids and to your spouse. It’s just another way to show your family that you love them!

Be sure to visit Rocks In My Dryer…I got to meet Shannon at BlissDom and she’s very sweet!

Be sure to go to Nesting Place on Friday! Nester and I have a special surprise for you all!

Show and Tell Friday!

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Kelli at No Place Like Home has asked us to show some of our favorite things.

img_17441

My piano is one of my very favorite things! I really enjoy sitting down and playing for a little while each day. I’ve been playing the piano for about 12 years now. The Lord will often put a song in my heart and I’ll write it down. You can see my scribblings sitting on the piano right now. My handwriting is much nicer when I’m not trying to get lyrics down before they float right out of my head!

Moss Ball Tutorial

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

(Sorry this is a little late, our internet was down last night. Sigh….)

img_01161

As promised I will show you how I made this cute moss ball.  Here we go…this is SUPER simple.  (I almost feel embarrassed to show you how to do this…you smart gals could figure out how to do this on your own!)

This is what I did:

img_0133

Pick out what container you’d like to use.

img_0134

Then pick out a green or white foam ball the size that you’d like your moss ball to be. (Match the size up with the container that you’d like to use.)   Get enough moss to cover it ( I got mine from our woods, but you can also find moss at craft stores.) You only need enough moss to cover the part of the ball that will be showing. Since mine was going into the little urn I needed to cover all but a little bit of the bottom.

img_0138

Fold some wire into a hairpin shape.  (You can use small sections of wire or  purchase floral pins at the craft store.)

img_0139

Lay the moss over the ball and start pinning the moss in place.  Keep going until the surface is covered and then look to be sure there’s no foam showing.

img_0151

Put it into your container and there you go!  The moss I used was fresh and as it’s dried it’s stayed green, but I think it would look good in any color moss you can find.  Hope you all enjoyed this!

Tomorrow’s Post:  I have some inside information on an Etsy artist that will warm your heart!

Spring Decorating: How To Make A Nest

Monday, January 5th, 2009

After the Christmas decorations come down I’m pretty much done with winter.  I’m ready for spring!  I know, I know…it’s still a few months off.

The gray days of winter can be very disheartening.  One way I like to brighten them up is to have spring inside!

img_01061

I put together this arrangement from things I found around the house,  a la Nester.   I had a tiny birds nest and wanted a large one.  So I just made it bigger!

How to put together a “make a bird jealous” nest.

img_01182 First take a lonely little birds nest.

img_01211

Gather some sticks and twigs in the yard.

img_0124

Then add your nest to the twiggy pile.

img_0126Wrap some straw/dead grass/or vines in and around the sticks. Add a few leaves and you’re done!

img_0127Ta Da!  A lovely nest.  Be sure to take it inside or some bird may move right in!

img_0116See the moss ball in the photo?  Come back on Thursday the 8th and I’ll tell you how I made it, pictures and all!

New Arrival

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

bird-tassel
No it’s not a new baby…it’s a tassel from Nester!
This little cutie came in the mail last Friday and it felt like my birthday just opening the package. I’m sure you all have seen the wonderful tassels she makes. They are even more beautiful in person!

My little friend has a special place in my kitchen, to help with all the cooking and cleaning that goes on around here.
Our kids seem like they are eating all the time! I feed them a nice lunch and about thirty miniutes later they are saying “I’m HUNGRY!”.

Oh, boy….back to the kitchen.
Sweet hungry kids.
See you all tomorrow…they’re hungry again!

Your kids the same way? Do tell!
