Fall Poem-When The Frost Is On The Punkin

Monday, September 14th, 2009

I’m having my 9 year-old use this poem as a way to practice his handwriting.  James Whitcomb Riley is a family favorite around here. My Mother’s family is from Indiana and so is James Whitcomb Riley.  The things that he writes about stirs a memory of quiet, meaningful country life, that all of us long for at times. Enjoy!

“When the Frost is on the Punkin”
by James Whitcomb Riley

WHEN the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,
And the clackin’ of the guineys, and the cluckin’ of the hens,
And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it’s then the time a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,
With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here—
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossoms on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;
But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries—kindo’ lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover overhead!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the cellar-floor in red and yaller heaps;
And your cider-makin’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With theyr mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and sausage too!…
I don’t know how to tell it—but ef such a thing could be
As the angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me—
I’d want to ‘commodate ‘em—all the whole-indurin’ flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

Favorite Books For Children

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Here are some of our favorite books for kids.  Most of these were favorites of mine when I was little and my books were passed down to our children!

Your children will probably like them too!  Head over to your local library or to Amazon and check them out!

Works For Me Wednesday: You Tube Education

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Welcome to an unusual Works For Me Wednesday!  We use the internet, especially videos, to supplement our regular studies.  There are so many great educational videos that bring your current topic to life….and what kid won’t like getting to watch videos on the computer?!

(Just a tip: Because of the nasty content of some videos on You Tube, be sure to stay with your kids while they watch these videos. The video you’re watching will be clean, but after it’s over other small screen video options could pop up.)

Here are a few of our favorites:

BABIES LOST TO ABORTION IN USA— 50+ MILLION

“In the past two hundred years, over one million Americans have died for their country. Monuments have been built and speeches have been delivered, honoring these American heroes. America is now engaged in a war where there are no heroes, no monuments or accolades – only victims. Our society has declared war on its most helpless members – our unborn children. Since that war was declared on January 22, 1973, there have been over 50 million deaths.”

This Sunday let’s pray:

For the babies of Mothers who feel trapped with no options

For the Mothers with arms and hearts empty from a decision they regret

For the scared teenager who’s boyfriend left her stranded

Let’s remember that most women have just believed a lie– that the life growing inside her is just “tissue”.

Being AGAINST abortion is not enough,  we also need to be FOR the Mother’s who are desperate and FOR their babies lives that hang in the balance.

Cabin Fever Crafts

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Y’all we’ve been having a touch of cabin fever. A cold front hit Tennessee on Wednesday night.  The highs have been in the 20′s and the lows are single digits.  I know my readers north of the Mason Dixon line are laughing right now because I think this is cold!  So needless to say we have been inside.
Because I homeschool our 8 year old son and a 2 year old daughter we stay at home A LOT.  I’m happy to be home, but when the option to go outside and play is totally out of the question we need something fun to do inside!

Things that help the little folks at our house stay happy:

*Finger painting

*Coloring

* Play Dough

*Legos

*Dolls and tea parties

Whip Up and Crafty Crow often have some great crafts for moms and for kids.
