Fall Fashion 2009

Fashion has always interested me.  One of the (many) things I wanted to be, growing up, was a fashion designer and model.  When I was thirteen I got to have one of my dreams come true….I went to modeling school!  ( I may even share some pictures from back then.)

We found a Christian modeling agency near us and I had such a great time.  Even though that seems like a long time ago, I still enjoy fashion and modeling.  ( I just think it’s sad how raunchy modeling has become.)

Pantone has the new fall fashion colors available for download here.  You can see the new colors as well as get some budget friendly advice about updating your wardrobe for fall!

By knowing what the “new” colors will be for fall, you can scout out your local thrift store, find the colors there and still stay in budget!

So are you excited about changing to fall clothes?  What season do you enjoy dressing for the most?

Works For Me Wednesday: Local Food

Our family follows the Nourishing Traditions/ Weston Price way of eating.  In a nutshell, that means that we eat real food, the way our Great Grandparents did.

(We have eaten junk for so long that it’s taking a while for me to get back to a healthy weight. We used to eat white sugar filled deserts every night!  It would be wonderful to wake up and be fit, but that’s not going to happen. So, I’ll just keep eating well and exercising.)

Funny thing… most grocery stores don’t have a lot of real food!  So, how do we find healthy, affordable things to eat?  The answer is local food.

You can go to Local Harvest to find farmer’s markets, local farmers and farm stands near you.  I have found some wonderful family farms in my town with this great tool.

When you are buying locally it’s better for you and your budget!  You are eating food that’s very fresh and keeping your food dollars in your local community…in the hands of the hardworking farmer, where they belong!

I totally agree with  Jenny, from The Nourished Kitchen, when she said, “Saving money should come from proper kitchen management, not from skimping on the quality of food you purchase.” She has a great article about budget friendly, healthy food you can read here.

Eating Healthy On A Budget: Part 1

When I started learning about nourishing food, I was really excited.  But, there was one thing I was dreading….my grocery bill.  Because everyone knows that healthy food costs more, right? Well it can, but it doesn’t have to.

When I first started buying healthy food, I was shocked when I left the store.  I left with only a few bags to take home and a short receipt in my hand. My grocery budget was shot.  Something had to change!

I’ve learned a few things that have helped me feed our family healthy food on a budget. I believe these tips will help you too!

First, having a menu plan will make the greatest difference in the amount you spend at the grocery.  But, remember that a menu plan only works if you actually USE the menu you’ve written down!

Start prepping your evening meal in the morning; so you won’t be too tired to cook that night. (If you’re too tired to cook, fast food is very tempting! Ask me how I know!)

Organic and Thrifty sums this up nicely: “Remember, the way to eat nourishing without spending a bunch of money is to look for the deals on meat, poultry, and seafood as well as produce and build your menu on those things. Then, round out your meals with whatever you have on hand. And remember, you don’t need lots and lots of meat per meal; only about the size of a deck of cards!”

Stay tuned for part 2 on Wednesday.  I’ll be showing you what I bought on my last grocery trip and how I saved almost $30 in a regular grocery store!
